1993 888 SPO left/headlight switch assembly & wiring

Hey all,

I picked up a European left/headlight switch, with plans to swap it with my U.S. switch....lo and behold, my switch is completely different! I know that others have swapped theirs, and it was apparently plug & play...but that can't be true. Wiring aside, the connectors are entirely different!

The square box-type connector is what the Euro version has (and it's what I've seen on almost every other early 90's Ducati. (#1 in photos)

The linear, waterproof connector is what my bike has on it. (#2 in photos)

Does anyone else have the waterproof connectors as original fitment, or is mine some sort of unicorn?

I'd like to install the switch regardless, and it's no problem to figure out the wiring and re-wire as needed. That being said, does anyone happen to have a wiring diagram for the 1993 bikes? Specifically, the 888 SPO from 1993, as it may differ from the euro models.

Looks like this issue has popped up before judging by previous posts here on the forum.

I'll do the rewire project this week, take lots of pics, and maybe post a DIY in case anyone else has this issue again in the future. 😉

Hey RWG,

Thanks for checking....apparently, and from what I've been able to find out, the early 851s and 888s (up to 92) had the Molex, 9-pin, box-style connectors...the later-model 888 SPOs and SP5s got the two, waterproof, 5-pin, in-line connectors.

I went over all of the wiring diagrams, ran a few tests, and just created a plug-n-play adaptor for the Euro switch. One end plugs directly into the Molex 9-pin connector from the switch, the other side splits into two 5-pin connectors that plug directly into the connectors on the bike! 😉
