Ducati 888 SP5

Morning all ! I’m new here
She’s currently a non Runner really In rough shape and I probably paid to much
I can go one of 2 ways build for track or a full ground up restoration project
All opinions experiences and advice gratefully received.

If it's an SP5 I'd restore to original - rare bike deserves to be preserved.

If it's a Strada - they do look good stripped back to track spec and many later improved parts from other Ducati models are interchangeable

Here to help Ted are the Photos of his bike. Now time for some additional feedback.

VIN stamped on headstock corresponds with SP5 number range and top yoke plaque looks to be genuine. Along with alloy subframe, floating rear brake, colour of fork bottoms, exhaust etc. I'd say you have a genuine SP5 chassis - be good to see engine number and pics of heads showing stamps to help identify correct engine.

Wheels are not standard but highly desirable if undamaged - it's clearly been standing for some time, do you know any of the bikes history?

It looks like a bit of a project but worth it as it is a SP5.
Wheels,mufflers,footrests,fuel tank...not original or right for a SP5.

Unfortunately not. The bike has been standing in an old workshop. The good thing is the workshop is dry and no damp or humidity so under the grime there is very little corrosion. However the bike hasn’t been started un the last 12 years

Think that the engine or at least the case is from a strada with that number.
But somebody else will know for sure here.

Engine cases number fits within with SP5 range so well done you've brought a genuine SP5. Assuming the engine has not been messed with the small number of original parts missing in the photos are not to hard to obtain with a bit of searching. There's a guy on this forum that's close to finishing a quality restoration of his SP4, worth a read for a bit of inspiration & useful contacts if that's the route you decide to go

So no B behind it,or is this just for SP4 engines then?

My bad Henk, I skipped past the B' which you correctly point out identifies the cases as Strada not SP.

Interesting to know if it's a complete Strada lump or Strada cases with SP5 internals, heads & twin injectors etc.

sp5 cases will have the spigots machined to suit 96mm cylinders, so std cases need to be machined to work with sp5 bits. not impossible, but some work required.

Just on a side note, Brad, the cast boss that holds the selector drum sprung loaded not jump out of gear thing, get incorporated into the 888 series cases. 916’s have them.

They were incorporated into the '92 851 Strada, 888SP4 and 888SPS /cases Griff, they just needed tapping out the thread to accept the part.
