AJV Breaking an ST4s to put the engine into 888 for more spirited use on track. Can't get swingarm disassembled from the ST engine, have removed bolt x2 from underneath swingarm which clamps shaft & removed circlip x2 locating shaft. Placed a bit of wood over the end of shaft and hit it with a hammer but it won't budge😡 Any suggestions to get it out? One good thing about getting older is you can walk away from snags before buggering everything up
griff851 Have you tried drowning it in wd40 overnight yet. It will be bound to the swing arm. A wedge in the clamping slit will help but be careful as it’s aluminium. May be a bit of Perspex ground to a wedge.
Mr.R The 2 bolts clamping the spindle actually clamp 2 cotter pins together, these have chamfers on them that clamp into a groove at each side of the arm. Put the bolts back in loosely and tap out the threaded cotters, then from the other side tap out the unthreaded cotters. You should be able to then remove the spindle. I found this out when I converted 3 ST4S swinging arms to fit 851/888's. Steve R
AJV Cotter pins with thread came straight out from top of swingarm using method suggested by Steve. Bottom pins won't budge (drifting from above swingarm to remove below). Trying Griffs suggestion now, applied some light oil to soak them overnight, think I'll also remove the frame from the engine so that I can get a good clean strike on the drift. Keep calm & try another day
econti For stuck things I mix a 50/50 of auto trans fluid and acetone (mrs nail polish remover) and let it sit on the item for a day or two
griff851 I'm a bit confused. By cotter pin do you mean the 8mm bolt in each leg, item 4. The only thing you should be hitting with hammer and drift is the swing arm pin, Item 2. Just checking your not hooking into the wrong thing.
Mr.R Griff, The OP is stripping out a ST4S swinging arm, they have a different clamping system to the 851/888's. Steve R
AJV Job done, once the frame was away from the engine I could strike the lower cotter pins more firmly with a drift and they moved easily in the end. Glad I took my time and followed advice of others or I'd have ended up with a wrecked swingarm & shaft. I now have all parts from an ST4s except engine & loom to sell and possibly swingarm as I might try Steve's idea to fit the swingarm to gain Corse geometry along with new yokes Thanks guys
