Mid last year I bought an SP3 that hadn't been run for 15 plus years. It has since had a full service by a mechanic with years of experience with the desmoquattro engine, and is running, however....
The engine revs freely when in neutral, and in 1st and 2nd gear, but in any other gear the engine falters when it reaches about 4000 rpm until about 5000 rpm, but even after 5000 rpm the motor doesn't really rev hard.
The bike is stock, expect it has a K&N airfilter, and performance doesn't change whether if I have either the stock or free flowing mufflers fitted. The EPROM chip has the code

Has anyone had a similar experience with the above problem, and found the cause, and the fix?

Lack of fuel
Sounds like lack of fuel to me.. most likely a fuel pump not providing.. I would start in the tank, replacing pump and filters.. (also all fuel hoses inside tank and out side) .. old fuel lines can leak any moment and you may not have a SP3 any more !
The tank job is quick tricky if you have sausage fingers 😁
Step 2 would be a TB clean .. ultrasonic..

Have the injectors been cleaned and checked for flow?
New fuel filter and good pump?
Plug and coil connections all good?
I also had a one of the pair of relays under the seat making intermittent contact due to engine vibration at certain revs. A bad connection in the ignition lock or kill switch might do the same thing.
