I would get the spring corresponding to your weight before getting the oem' one. Man I gained a bunch of weight and it feels like my rear is bobbing all over the place! 🤣

is there any difference between 8071 & 8070? I can't see any... I have bought a good DU832, the STX46 shock version fitted to 2001 Monster EI, itself superseded by DU440, appears to be the same as that used in the DU807. I took it to an Ohlins franchise yesterday for a service and they are kindly checking but it looks like the DU440, DU832 & DU807 are all the same main shock absorber but each with different springs with rates to suit the application and different length reservoir hoses. I can have an 807 length hose fitted to my 832 shock if I want to, I have ordered the 110 rate spring. So whilst the SP Ohlins (DU8070/DU8071) are obsolete we can utilise the still available DU440 by fitting a 110 spring (or not if you want comfort over firm) and longer reservoir hose (more involved and cost around £100). There is a French dealer spotted by our own Ron who is offering allegedly an 807 new shock but we think this is a DU440 converted to DU807 spec with correct spring rate and longer reservoir hose - all for an eye watering £1450 - the DU440 is available for around £750 and a 110N/mm spring (1095-39/110) costs £68.59 from Ohlins (2 weeks lead time)

IME with a 110 spring fitted you'll be spending quite a bit of time being fired out of the seat on not too smooth roads.
All Ducati's come over sprung for the road and need softer springing, again in my 41+ years of experience of the marque.
The only difference between a 900 Monster Ohlins and a 851/888 item was the length of the remote cylinder hose.
I run a Maxton 9.25 spring on my bike, but if you really want a Ohlins 110?
I've a couple spare that I'll never use again that I'd let go for £20 each plus the postage.
Also K-Tech can supply a spring originally intended for a Yamaha Fazer 1000 that fits the 851/888 Ohlins perfectly for a bit less than a genuine Ohlins item.

Maxton say that the spring, compression damping are too hard and the rebound damping is too soft on the OEM Ohlins fitted to the SP's.
The shock needs softer springing to suit your weight etc and the internals need re-valving to suit, as there's not enough adjustment/range in the standard shocks.

Thanks for the offer Steve but I already ordered the 110 spring and have a 95 that came with the shock. I agree that Ducati like their bikes to ride on the 'sporting' side of bloody firm, but isn't that's part of their character? I had a Monster S with same-ish suspension front & back but with softer spring on the back and it was maybe too soft... I'll try the 110 and see how I g'g'g'et't o'o'on! I may be cynical but isn't it fantastic of Maxton to dish out useful information on the short fall of the competition? I have a CBR1000rr SP with 'analogue' Ohlins suspension and it's ride quality blows me away every time I ride it too fast for the roads. Mr Ohlins told me to avoid Maxton suspension at all costs, apparently he knows Ron Williams and says he is way too tightly sprung!??

I just find it interesting that information freely shared by people who have had these bikes for decades, ridden them for countless hours, clocked thousands and thousands of miles/kilometers on them can be so totally disreguarded by someone who has had very little experience with any 851/888 (seat time probably in the single digits). Just my two cents !

pull yeself together Marvin my man, if you are referring to me I asked the question to see what the consensus on springs with Ohlins dampers is, I am grateful to any input (homophobic bullying aside but we'll leave that one asleep), the information I have garnered resulted in me ordering the Ducati OE spring (thanks to contributors who posted images of their OE spring) and I have a 95, I can play around once I get the shock installed.

I think you’ll find that fat bastards are everywhere, it is best just to stick rider weight plus gear. Otherwise Steve who has known to be “portly” over the years may miss out on his smoko snack pie due to a ping of guilt, and we don’t want that. There are also some that are relatively tall.

There are 2 general conditions for riding sports bikes. The race track and the road. The requirements are completely different. One has bumps, cars, stray dogs and live stock, gravel ice moss, and occasionally vehicles parts, the other does not. Failure to set up accordingly can result in death at high speed. Having had the odd tank slapper at warp speeds I can’t stress to you enough that with one arm your looking down the barrel of a nasty with suspension set too hard. Unless of coarse your just pottering around being a general pubic on a bike. Gay or not.

Maxton is a performance tuning company like cogent dynamics and others, They are not pissing about blowing the wind up customers arses for the sake of a sale, as your new mate at Ohlins has just proven. They are in fact experts in the field of suspension tuning. Yes very punny last comment, but totally inaccurate. Would you ask a Pharmacist if they think you have cancer??
The SP’s are homologation model so you buy one and go on the track. Hence they are firmer. Same as the R series. The 4’s and 5’s also have barrel roller mains which have limited life... because it’s a race machine, and at the time they needed to find ways to stop the HP blowing the things to pieces at WOT for hours on end. I use this just as an example of how different things can be.

The long term guys on this forum are here to help those who through lack of experience would like to know stuff. You may not approve of their humour, or writing style, or even abrupt nature occasionally, but the fact is they know shit about these machines specifically as owners, race mechanics, engineers, enthusiasts and in a couple of cases professionally. This is not the kiddies sand pit here. (if you want that, try the cbr 250 forums, man there is some bullshit floating around there) The goal is to inform and hopefully ensure good working safe machines for people to enjoy riding and tinkering and if possible save money through discussion, education and sharing personal experience.
