Ignition coil 851/888 question

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the 851/888 ignition coils and thus the connectors ECU side are the same as those of the 748/916?

I am thinking of installing a quick shifter. Most brands have a harness for the 748 but none of them are mentioning the 851/888. If these are the same I would think it would be a plug and install as well for our bikes.

That's what I am thinking as well.
Would hate to splice the loom, might have a chance it won't be needed.

Currently looking at two stand alone QS systems, both I feel of high quality.
I hear good things about the Healtech but important setting it up right.

So I rather invest a little more in a system that's a little more robust and easier to set up to reduce the risk of damaging the gearbox of the 851.

Current shortlist:
Cordona PQ8
Translogic QSXi

Both have a harness for the 748/996.

851 no, 888 yes. parts catalogue has the same number back to 91 851 and 907 and up to 05 st4s, but i'm pretty sure the 907 had the older 851 style with the spade terminals. could be wrong.

Just means I would have to get some connectors to prevent having to splice the loom.

Yes Marvin,
I am looking at the Stein-Dinse site and they are stating the same coils for the 851, 888, 748, 916 and 996. And indeed, like Brad also says, like the ST4s as well. Looks like they are all the same. Didn't check the 907 coil.

Guess (hope) that the QS manufacturers didn't check compatibility with the 851/888 because of the low volume they represent. Commercially not relevant.

Nice set up.
Was there a harness that was plug and play for our bikes (the 748 harnesss?)?
I did see Cordona have such a pedal too, and reasonably priced as well.

I first need to test this reverse shifting with a pedal directly mounted like that. If I like that way of shifting, than such a pedal set up for the quick shifter is the way to go.
The HM Plus SS is also an interesting option, but I guess these HM pedals are really costly. The Cordona pq8 with such a pedal can be had (new) for like 600 euro.

my 851 is an 89, which uses a different coil. but if marvin's 92 had the later coil then the change over was before then. shouldn't have any issue with a 916, etc part.

Brad's on the money here, I use 748/916 coils on my '92 based 851/955.
You just have to swap the 748/916 coils into the 851/888 brackets to fit them, this involves turning them through 90 degrees.

So if I understand you correctly the coil of the older 851 generation might differ from the coil for the 916 series. But I feel for installing the quickshifter with the harness of the 748/916 it is not exactly about the coil itself but about the connection to the coil, the type of connector.

In the Stein-Dinse catalog they state the same replacement coil for the 851 and the 748/916. It might involve turning the coil in the bracket to get it to fit, but it shouldn't involve replacing the connectors.

So I still have hope that fitting a Translogic of Cordona quickshifter using the harness of the 748/996 series could be a plug&play excercise.

What might be more problematic is the shift rod of the 851/888, didn't dive into that yet. I see for the Cordona as well as the HM (Jasper's picture) they have a special lever for this if you want to have the lever directly mounted on the gear box shaft. Don't know about the Translogic, couldn't find such a lever searching the internet.
