Fuel Pump issues

Not riding my 888 much, I find that the fuel pump doesn't seem to last long when just sitting around. I installed my current pump only a few months ago, but already it doesn't work. The previous pump was good for about the same period, three months only.

Is that normal when a bike doesn't get used much, or just my bad luck ?

Crank case breather - any maintenance required ?

Does the tank need cleaning every now again ? or any other maintenance ?

unless the tank is full of crap, pumps should last years.

Hi John - my pump failed, it has a cone filter at its base which was clogged due to the in tank fuel pipes breaking down through age - I replaced the pipes (must use submersible petrol pipe), replaced the cone filter (took some finding but there are filters out there) and replaced the fuel pump, also the inline fuel filter as well - the OE fuel pump is a common or garden inexpensive pump (around £50 for OEM but not bought from Ducati), I can look for the part number if u like?

Hi AJV, do you mean the fuel filter in line after the pump or the gauze attached to the bottom of the pump rubber ?

I changed the inline one, and I have the gauze one on order to change as well.

Thanks Lefty, I know the OEM part is the Walbro AUO195, which interestingly has a gauze filter in it's base. For my last pump I grabbed a generic Volvo pump which was compatible with the electrical connectors. There are also Bosch options too. The OEM Walbro part seems to cost at least twice the other generic options.

I haven't heard of a cone filter, do you have a pic to share ? The Volvo and other pumps come with a "sock" filter, which I guess shouldn't be needed if the gauze at the end of the rubber holder is still intact.

Both of them, a good source for the gauze filter attached to pump is BMW Motorrad, same part is fitted to K75

HI JOHN, Here is the link to the pump I bought on Ebay at £54, same as you state the Walbro AUO195. The second link is the cone filter that clips to the base of the pump, I foumnd a 'last one' at a local Ducati dealer, you may be lucky if you scout around, part number 16121455126

Thanks for the links Lefty, much appreciated, that certainly the cheapest I have seen a Walbro AOU195 listed anywhere !!

That cone filter looks to be the same as what I just ordered (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm//224142522017) given as part number D42710031A, they look to be the same in which case it clips on to the rubber mount and not the pump body itself - true ?

16121455126 is a bmw part #.

42710031a is the ducati # you can still get. retails for $18 locally.

Thanks Brad. Unfortunately I am no where near a Ducati dealer being in Tasmania, so I have one coming from Melbourne..I think it is about $18, but with the addition of postage.

Btw, do you sell parts like these, or are you focussed.on servicing. Just thinking if I need parts, I may as well come to you.:-) I read the article about you in Motorcycle Trader.

i keep everything i need to service them on the shelf pretty much. as time has gone on that's come to include all the in tank bits for 916 on esp, like these filters. rarely see 888 or 851.

the rubber bit no. i've never had to replace one.
