Just seen this for sale at Anthony Godin, the 2nd time I've seen him buy up an 888 at auction and slap another hefty sum on the sale price. This SP5 with over 30k miles, sold at Historic Auctioneers for £20k this week, bought by Godin and he now has it up for sale for £25k. They've done nothing to the bike too. He did the same with his last high mileage SPO, but sadly I guess that's the way the world works. Is this activity driving up the prices? Sadly folk are still buying them though.

To be fair, anyone could have bought that bike, if they really wanted it. Now if they do, they are going to have to want it more.

For myself, I bought the 888 as 1. a project, 2. an iconic bike that I always lusted after and 3. as an investment that meant my "man maths" with my wife meant that I would hopefully not lose any money.

Is the biggest issue the fact that someone is trying to make some money, which helps us justify the investment status to ourselves, or that someone is fundamentally doing something wrong, or that this is making these bikes fundamentally unachievable for many people (back to the investment theory)?

People will pay what they want to pay, and people will feel that they either got a good deal, fair deal, or bad deal and always have a story of the one (or two) that got away! At the end of the day, it is a waiting game - even a gamble, and it is down to who moves first!

Doesn't bother me at all. Hey, rising tide floats all boat, right? I don't begrudge people for making their money.

The only sad thing would be if they had parted it out.

It's a free market. If £20k was too cheap then you should have bought it. If £25k is too expensive then no-one will buy it. And remember that he probably won't get full price, and he has to provide dealer services such as a limited warrantee, insurance for test rides, storage costs, and compliance with consumer protection legislation (which auctions don't necessarily give). The new seller has taken the risk to invest £20k in a bike, so I don't begrudge him making a reasonable profit.

Old bike prices/values are comedic at the moment but at least it makes restoration worth while, that way when our generation starts to die off in bigger numbers the inheritors of various our old Italian and Jap bike collections will kill the market trying to sell... there'll be a nice recently serviced SP3 or road registered Corse for me to buy in a nearby town for a more realistic couple of grand!!!!...

Was that £20k including the fees ?

I know H&H Auctions charge 15% sellers fees on the hammer price and then you pay 20% VAT on the sellers fee making a £20k bike £23600
