Chain clip

Ever wonder why a chain link clip comes off. I read a few googled forums and it seems the belief is incorrect fitment( wrong way around, not secured correctly) or maybe chain flex. Today I changed the chain on the CBR250RR race bike. 428 chain. At some stage in the last track session the clip came off. Pete was Lone Ranger and didn't notice when. According to gearing commander the bike peaks out at 228kmph (19k ) on the straight. Due to a stroke of luck the clip was in the chain fling off near the front sprocket. Looks like a failure to me.
Only ever had one clip come off and that was on the 851 at about 180. I use rivet links only now.

I almost always use rivet links. I have used clip-ons but used fine safety wire and Permatex Ultrabond.

i use them on 400, but i see them on all sorts of things. i think the "incorrect fitment" is part of the need people seem to have to bad mouth someone who touched it previously when there is, realistically, no other explanation that falls to hand. because no one ever looks at it before it's gone to know if it was fitted incorrectly or not.

Apart for my 851 which I always rivet (we're looking at well over 100rwbhp here), I've used them on an awful lot of bikes inc' 1,000cc 24 Hour race bikes almost without any problems.
The only times I've experienced the spring clip going AWOL is when using RK chains on race 350 Yamaha's 350 TZ's and Proddy 350 YPVS's, all of which had somewhat vicious power deliveries.
After experiencing this problem more than once (leading me to conclude it wasn't a premature failure) I took to pulling the spring tight onto the link after fitting, using my old faithful Renold's chain breaker and painting the links with bright yellow paint to make them easier to keep an eye on.
I've NEVER suffered the problem again after doing this.
Unless they suffer from a Prem' Failure chains usually only snap when they're worn out/totally shagged/almost hanging off the sprocket and you've taken the bike for one last ride too many before fitting a new chain.
I've been guilty of this faux pas/F'ck up once or twice over the years.

I run a spring link on my 530 chained 950+cc Bevel that's kicking out around 90rwbhp, with total confidence that it isn't going to let me down.

Lasted forever if fitted properly..
