Just looking for general thoughts on the subject. Let's say you have a collector quality 851. Aftermarket, high-mount silencers were installed early in its life, and over time, the original silencers became separated from the bike.
What kind of impact would this have on the overall value of the bike if the original silencers were missing? I know it's subjective, so perhaps the viewpoint of a buyer would be one perspective.

This is a really personal thing. If you want it 100% original, then you will want all of the factory parts on the bike and keep looking until you find one. When I looked for my 888, I was after one with various additional options, such as carbon parts, Termignoni high level pipes, as I wanted to have something that had some "in period" upgrades and the one I found had these, Including a registration with 888 in it.
As long as they are in tune with the regularly requested modifications of the time and don't detract from the styling, then many people will accept these as character.
I have since sourced the original low level pipes and rear footpegs, just in case someone offers me a deal I can't refuse for it 😁.

In My opinion is these bike more than any other in Ducati stable that deserves to be ridden, ridden well and ridden hard. So with this in Mind making your bike work for you changing what ever I prove is a posative.
For sure keeping standard part are important If you have them in first instance, but i have bought None standard bikes purely on the basis that they already have what I would aim to fit.
Still have a Tricolore, Sp4 and a project 851, in all proberply
Had in excessive of 10.
Ride it and you will not regret it, even when you come to sell.

I watch Harry Metcalfe on youtube with his car collection. He drives them all and says don't stare at them ,make memories with them! I am still waiting for my 888 to be registered but I will pick my days and ride it regularly. It won't be a daily driver and if i ever do sell it and it has lost money, too bad as I will have memories, hopefully good ones, and it won't lose as much as I have lost on normal cars!!☺
