I'm planning to move my somewhat recently acquired '92 851 into my home office, so it will live in a climate controlled environment for the remainder of its life. 😎
It's going to be a pain in the derriere to get it situated, so it's likely I won't be riding it more than once a year at most. Yeah, I know, I know, it's meant to be ridden, but I'm afraid to drive a car where I live!
Anyway, what steps should I take to prepare it for long term storage? Let's assume it could remain idle for 2-3 years without being started. Aside from the obvious (draining the fuel tank), what other items should be addressed?
Here's where my mind is going, along with some questions:
1. Run non-ethanol fuel through the system with a high dose of Techron and Stabil.
2. Remove battery and drain fuel
Q - Do I need to fog the aluminum tank?
Q - How do I "preserve" the fuel pump?
Q - What do I do about the fuel injection system? Does it need to be drained/cleared?
3. Remove plugs, fog the cylinders, and turn the engine over to fully lubricate the internals.
4. Replace the fluids on an annual basis (oil, filter, clutch/brake, coolant).
5. Turn the engine over every 30 days to preserve the new belts, and keep the cylinder walls coated with fogging oil.
6. Rotate the wheels/tires to prevent flat spots.
I'm sure there's a routine that collectors go through when they store things for 10 years, so am I on the right track? Overkill? What am I missing?
