Battery Advice

Hi,Think my SP5 needs a new battery,trying to charge at the moment. Looking for advice as to best route to go please if replacement is required

I have the same dilemma, I'm going to stick with standard Yuasa lead/acid for now, as this is what all of the bikes charging systems and electrical circuits were designed for. I like the idea of Lithium but we may have to change/alter our charging systems to suit, and I can't be bothered with that, and the prospect of introducing another gremlin

Thanks Dean. That's exactly what's on my mind. I have trawled old threads and read about the Hawker Odyssey pc545 but they are old threads and was wondering what the latest advice was. I am also not clear on what else I would have to do

I ran a PC545 for a few years/10's of thousands of miles without any problems, It NEVER failed to fire up my tuned 916cc 851 motor.
Later I went for a "Balistic" Lithium item that was also trouble free, so much so that I transferred it to my '79 900SS. But last year it died as I was leaving the Dock at Douglas IOM, it was several years old by then though.
I now run a "JMT" Lithium-Ionen HJT12B-FP-SI in my 851 with heavier gauge wires from the Alternator to the lithium friendly "Mosfett" Reg/Rec (mounted to the alloy tail tidy) and onto the battery using Gold plated bullet connectors at all the junctions.
...and this set up has been totally bullet proof.
The JMT is at least 8x's lighter than the PC545.

Thanks Steve I was hoping you would join in. Having read info on the JMT in the FAQs it states they are designed to run with existing charging systems. Is that correct for my bike and is the additional stuff you did belt and braces or necessity?

I did run the Balistic and the JMT with a standard Mosfett, but also with a charge warning LED for safety's sake.
It was set to trigger the warning RED flashing light at anything over 14.5v, WHICH IT DID quite often causing me to run with the main beam on to drop the volts across the battery.
Hence now running the Lithium friendly Mosfett that's set to reg' the charge at 14.4v.

...And yes the heavier gauge wires with gold plated bullet connectors* (These should be soldered to the wires!!) along with a better reg/rec is a MUST DO IMO.
The original 851/888 charging system wires, connectors and reg'reg weren't really up to the job in hand, as many of us on here have found out over the years.
If you fit a PC545 then also fit either a Shindengan SH673-12 from a 916 or standard Mosfett.

*Available from any radio controlled model shop or E-Bay. They don't cost very much and will never corrode causing over heated/melted wiring.

And they're (Yuasa) available at your local Halfords for about £68, so easy to return if any problems
