DezmoDog wroteAnd if you are thinking of a lithium battery you really do need a modern regulator also. Ask me how I know.
A battery monitor isn't a bad idea either.
I'll be interested in your news but it's too late for me. Been there, done that (4 years ago), then bought the mosfet regulator... and put another lithium in. So far so good.
And I just ordered one for my track bike last night. SWORE I'd get an AGM to avoid the costs but just couldn't do it.
Good way to get that point across. So much hoopla over using Li batteries without explaining the downsides.
I am surprised that the EarthX failed like that--I thought the BMS chip in the battery was supposed to cut off charging when it senses an overcharge.
I popped the top off another brand in my Wraith due to a failed rectifier when I was a few miles from home.
I bought the EarthX because there is a BMS integrated into their battery. It has worked so well for me that I sent them a photo of me and my Wraith-- and they put it on their website.
It is pretty disappointing to see that the BSM does not function as advertised.
I have put a voltmeter on all of my bikes since '97 when my 851's red charge (lack of) light went on-- and my 851 shut dow. Ducati red light = dead battery.
On my Wraith I thought I was close enough to get her home before she would meltdown and go up in flames. Lucky for me the battery just popped off its top and smelled like stink. Next time I will quickly park the bike.
This is the danger of using an LI battery without the correct charger.
