Hi All. This is the first time Ive dropped the oil on my 888 since a full engine rebuild. The reason for the re-build was to replace the oil gallery plug which worked loose and was carried out by a local Ducati trained mechanic. The bike has been layed up for a a couple of years and was running fine prior, Im carrying out a service prior to putting it back on the road this year. Its not done much miles since the re-build, maybe a couple of thousand max. Im puzzled why this woodruff key could be in the oil but the engine running fine. No oil light and seem to be generating ok albeit light would flicker a bit on tickover. I have changed the belts and all pulleys and crank were turning as normal. Im confused.....any help out there? Thanks

If there is no or minimal damage to the key then it was probably lost by the tech, who then installed another one when he couldn't find it. Failing that, if the key wasn't installed properly it is possible for it to walk out during the installation of the mating component. The later is unlikely though as this would have shown up well before now.
Your photos do not show up but a 10mm key is possibly from the crankshaft and would be the primary gear. I don't have access to my parts manual at the moment so only guessing here.
Cheers

All the D shaped woodruff keys in the motor are @10mm , the only one you could get away with is the primary gear on end of crank as once torqued up on it's taper it's solid as a rock
.. however, hard use may cause it to spin !
The others are timing shaft and would be a big issue if missing !
Most lightly it was loose in there by mistake (lost) .
Hope this helps mate .

Thanks for the info. I have spoken with the guy that rebuilt the engine and he wants it back in his workshop to get the side covers off to check all is ok.
