nine16 I've heard conflicting information on whether a frame (ZDM851S1-850252) is Tricolore kit, or strada? Can anyone confirm either way?
851 tricolore yes, I understand the front subframe fixing for kits is a square plate on the headstock
851 tricolore great information and my records agree with the strada chassis numbers but what bikes were made up to 051 ? I have some kits on my records with lower numbers ! thanks Ian
RS02 I am also interested in your question. According to Bonhams auction description of A Cathcart's bike ZDM851S850009, it says "the first four frame numbers were assigned to the factory pre-production prototypes, following which seven hand-built customer racers were completed in November 1987. Only these first seven are known as the 'Superbike Edizione 11/1987" I've also seen some USA spec tricolore kits with frame numbers less than 850051 on the web but they have a different prefix compared to the Euro bikes. Rgds, John
lefty VIN's of this era (except the US) are made up as follows: - ZDM designates "Ducati made in Italy" - the next numericals state the bike's engine size (eg 851 or 888) - next bit designates bike type (S= Superbike, M = Monster etc.) - next is 'intended use' "street" (1) or "race" (* or no character) - the remaining numbers were the position off the production line so go check your VIN's, prey for "S" with no "1" immediately after or with an * immediately after (ZDM851S... or ZDM851S*... or ZDM888S... or ZDM888S*...) and you have a homologation - a KIT, an SP2, SP3, SP4, SPS or SP5. If your VIN is ZDM851S1... or ZDM888S1 you have a common or garden standardbike
