bugger, std stroke it is. destroked 996 then, 98 x 64, 965cc. need some longer rods and high comps.
bob brown told me that after he welded in a brace (well, similarly sized piece of tube) running horizontally above and below the fame x, the cases stopped cracking. maybe it's the fact that the only thing stopping the frame from folding at the x is the cases underneath. and that stressed them enough, that when having the snot revved out of them, they let go.
balance will not help, if it did they would have fixed it. the energy disapated is proportional to the square of the speed.
they cracked cases consistantly until mid 90's or so from memory. maybe when they went 996 in the factory bikes they made the cases better? i think by the 998 times it wasn't an issue any more? don't recall.
