Pump cover.. another area of variants

Was about to mount a new cover on a 92 engine, and realize it's different .. whats the story here, race version of just a different year ?

Hi Stig,

From the 916 onwards (and possibly the late 888's?) the shape of the impeller changed along with the inside of the water pump cover to prevent cavitation.
It's better to fit the later parts for a high performance motor.

Thanks steve, makes sense. Do you know if later impellers fit older left covers 1:1 ?

From memory as I went through this 10+ years ago. There are 3 impeller, white black and gold, the sealing system changed as well. Original seal kits are no longer available for the black alternator covers. The upshot is if you get coolant coming out of the little hole on a black alternator cover you have to get all inventive as one guy here did or change the alternator cover with a later model one.

Yes you can swap the 916 impeller and cover straight into/onto the '92 851/888 onwards alternator casings.
