German: Tachometer = Speedometer in English
Drehzahlmesser= Tachometer in English
Dutch: (where Rudy is from) Tachometer = Speedometer in English.

Italian: Tachimetro = Speedometer.
Greek: Tachymetro = Speedometer

I'm sure that there are others, but you get the idea.

In the dictionary definition, the tachometer is really a rev counter as it measures RPM and not MPH, or KPH. However, as the traditional systems used both revolution of wheel speed as well as revolutions of engine to display on a dial, this became a generic term for both a speedometer and rev counter.

In an aircraft the tachometer is used to display engine revs, then they have an air speed indicator to show how fast they are travelling through the air.

I always used Tachometer to mean Rev counter, but that's just me being English.
