Just reading Jasper's Post about swapping wheels reminded me of how I still keep all my bike pieces as well. Even my rear wheel. It has a steel insert where the bearing wore out the hub.
It was back in the mid nineties, I was visiting a shared house where I kept my bike while I was on holidays from Saudi . There was a young girlie there who kept pestering me for a ride, so in exchange for her favors, I agreed. (I'm a mercenary, what can I say.) I had a busy schedule, so it was decided to go first thing in the morning, just around the inner suburban streets that I knew fairly well. The problem was the night before, I was in a heavy state of "social confusion", so not feeling at the top of my game the next morning, at about 6 am we went out. The road was Fairfield rd ( for fellow brisso's) I was heading
south and feeling keen. I came across this nice little twisty bit (just before the RSPCA), so I opened it up with girlie on the back. The last time I looked at the dash it had 7000rpm and I was in third (about 120kph). Next thing, surprise, surprise, the bloody round-a-bout 😯! I grabbed hand fulls of brake and stepped on the RH pedal. The bike locked up, the back came around, and started a 2 wheel slide, angled over sliding to take on the round-about side on. Realizing we were about to die in a nasty high side, I let go the brakes and gave it gas. The bike straighted up and we hit the guttering and became air born. I clearly remember seeing the RH mirror. (genuine round "V") just disappearing. The big black and white arrows sheet style sign post had stolen it. Next we landed and bounced then came to a juttering rolling rest, girlie still on the back. ( I landed in Park Rd, how ironic). Both tires were flat and the wheels had perfect imprints of the shape of the round-a-bout guttering in them that I had manged to hit straight on, the mirror was missing but no fairing damage. Strangely enough I felt a bit pale...... That didn't last long. The girlie took off her helmet looked at me with madness in her eyes and said "Weee that was fun, come on lets get going!" F***ing unbeliveable!
I was just glad that spending years and many miles on the bevel and having been pear shaped on more than one occasion, had taught me some instinctive behavior

I got on the bike, she got on, it started after a bit, and I pulled away, very bumpy, very slow. The girlie kept asking why we couldn't go any faster like before. I told her my toy was broken, and what had just happened was in fact very bad and very naughty. So we rode to the bike shop that was only a couple of Km away.
I left the bike at the shop to have both wheels fixed. They were rolled out and repainted. I never really trusted the front wheel so replaced it 6mths later on my next holiday, the old wheel I took to the dump. The rear wheel went on for a year or so before the impact damage on the hub from the bearing showed its ugly head. So I got it sleeved, but replaced it another year later.
