Hi Andy, My adjusters were also in my mailbox at the end of my driveway today, they look grrreat, Thanks for you efforts. When I got to the house, as I was coming back the lumberyard, there was the package from henk-- had a carbon V-piece and air horns. For me it was better than Xmas as at my age the usual stuff I get is socks, ties and the sweaters Trav henk your mate did a swell job on the carbon, thanks to you and him.

Cutting a spring shorter, which is just a wound-up length of steel, makes it stiffer.

Like you say fork springs and shock spring are chosen according to the loaded and unloaded weight of the bike. Preload is only used to set the static sag of the bike. When the springs are the right ones and the oillevel in the forks is good the bike will almost use all of it's suspension travel under maximum braking and acceleration without bottoming out! Once this is ok, preload isn't changed any more. That's also the reason why a lot of racers ditch their hydrolic preload adjuster of their shockabsorber: to heavy and allmost never used!
The only time we change the preload on our racing bike is when it rains: because braking and acceleration is less heavy.

But I don't understand what you mean with "ride height". For me this is determend by how far the forks are dropped in the yokes and by how high the rear stands. All of this without touching preload, rebound or compression settings.

i'm pretty sure that's exactly what i was getting at, preload is related to the spring rate and the riders weight and set up preference. using preload to alter ride height is incorrect, while, as marvin rightly says, if you crank it down it will raise the bike by exerting more spring pressure forcing the slider out, thus lengthening the preloaded length of the fork, it's an incorrect use of the function. My reply refers to marvins post #121, the way marvin has since explained how he sets his suspension is indeed correct, at least by my feeble understanding of suspension.

paul.
p.s, my S4R has an ohlins rear shock with a hydraulic preload adjuster that i use when i pillion my wife, if i forget to reset it i find the rear a little high for my liking, but if i don't set it, with wifey on board it handles like a chopper because the extra weight compresses the spring too much and gives the rebound a particularly hard time.

unless you apply too much heat and ruin the temper of the spring steel and thus it's spring rate..........
