The 888 Strada went for 7,000 at the hammer, but with the import duty that this attracted (due to condition and low mileage) and the commission, it would have cost the winner close to 10,000, befroe it being recommissioned for the road (been off the road since 1999).

I did bid on it, but set my limit at 7,000, so stopped myself........before things got messy at home.

Why would it have import duty, though it was from eu?

From the Bonhams Lot notes. It does feel wrong for a 23 year old vehicle......

    NEW MEANS OF TRANSPORT
Motor vehicle lots marked "NMT" originate from or are registered in another EU member state and have travelled less than 6,000km from new. Accordingly HMRC and the DVLA classify such machines as "New Means of Transport" under the Nova Scheme and are subject to VAT at 20% on the hammer price.

    From the HMRC site

2.2 When is a means of transport not new?
A ship or aircraft or a motorised land vehicle is not new when all the following conditions are met:

A ship or aircraft is not new
    • when more than three months have elapsed since the date of its first entry into service (see paragraph 2.3), and
    • it has, since its first entry into service, travelled under its own power for more than 100 hours if it is a ship, or 40 hours if it is an aircraft.

A motorised land vehicle is not new
    • when more than 6 months have elapsed since the date of its first entry into service (see paragraph 2.3), and
    • it has, since its first entry into service, travelled under its own power for more than 6000 kilometres.
